As you can see, I shot this image at high speed! High boat speed, that is. My shutter speed was actually fairly slow – 1/15th second, to be specific. So how did I keep the ‘hero’ of the shot in focus? Ingredients: Wide-angle lens Slow shutter speed Speedlight for fill-in flash Result: An exciting, dynamic image – one that keeps the boat and passengers clear while also capturing the exhilaration of hurtling across the water at sunset. There’s one other ingredient that I haven’t mentioned – one that was crucial to getting the exposure right. Shallow depth of field is a great way to pull focus straight to your subject by blurring the background. Not only that, the blur, also known as the "Bokeh," also provides distinct aesthetic qualities to your image.
